Our Mission
The Mitchell Sea MB Church exists solely to be a Church that is governed by the Holy Spirit. To always strive in all areas of our lives, to live in the will of Jesus and never in His way. To be a Church that meets inside the walls to collectively worship, while being empowered, to then leave the walls as the church, ready and willing to serve others. Our mandate is to seek the lost and introduce them to Jesus, both locally and worldwide. Mitchell Sea MB Church strives to be a place of shelter, comfort, worship and power! Where everybody is somebody! Where no one will leave the same way that they came!
Church History
Dorgan and Pink McQueen, along with Melvin, began searching for land to build a church. On August 7th, 1916, the late John P. Durham gave them a deed for a spot of land near Mitchell Swamp; there they began to build. After completion, the Reverend R.B.M. Hunter organized the church and named it Mitchell Sea Missionary Baptist Church.
Between the years of 1916 and 1927, the Pastors were as follows: Reverend R.B.M. Hunter, Reverend H.H. Wilson, Reverend Joe Gore, and Reverend Frank Griffin. In 1928, Reverend B.P. Stevenson from Longwood, North Carolina, pastored. During the time of his pastorship, the church membership increased tremendously. The Deacons were: Luther Gause, Harry Johnson, Promise Johnson, Handy Farmer, Isaiah Macon, Dan Yates, Albert Butler, Oliver McQueen, and Dargan McQueen. The Officers were: Sunday School Superintendent Oliver McQueen, Church Treasurer Pink McQueen, the Mother of the Church Ida McQueen (who also served as Church Treasurer after her husband, Pink McQueen’s death) and Church Clerk Bloomie Reaves. Reverend Stevenson served as Pastor for forty-one years.
After Reverend Stevenson’s death in 1969, Reverend Elijah Patrick of Longs, South Carolina, who was serving as Assistant Pastor, became Pastor and continued working for the upbuilding of the church. Deacons were: Fred Rogers, J.P. Mack, Chester Shaw, Sam Johnson, James Alford, Robert Moore, and Ernest Johnson.
On December 14th, 1971, the church was destroyed by an unknown fire. Again, there was a search for a place to rebuild . The late Pink McQueen’s granddaughter, Estella Floyd, sold us property to build on. Another Deacon was added to the Deacon Board, James Franklin Treadwell Jr. The struggle of rebuilding the church began. The Board of Trustees were: Chairman James F. Treadwell, Co-Chairman Heyward Clark, Chester Shaw, William Johnson, and Tonie Vereene Jr. The Officers were: Church Clerk Flora Ford, Treasurer Leona Stackhouse, Sunday School Superintendent Ernest Johnson, Sunday School Treasurer J.P. Mack and the Chairman of Deacons Fred Rogers. Others who served as Sunday School Superintendent were: Harm Wilson, Handy Farmer, Alee McQueen, Ike Cogdell Jr., Oliver McQueen, L.D. Melvin, James F. Through prayer and God’s guidance, we were led to Reverend Samuel J. Dailey of Florence, South Carolina. He accepted the pastorship and preached his first sermon on April 10th, 1988. Reverend Tonie Vereene was the Assistant Pastor to Reverend Dailey. Under Reverend Dailey’s leadership, we were able to brick the church, add additional classrooms for Sunday School, two bathrooms in the back and the pastor’s study. The Board of Deacons were: Chairman James F. Treadwell, Ernest Johnson, James Alford, Joe Johnson, and U.T. Gause.
In 1992, Reverend Dailey’s health began to fail and he was unable to serve as he wanted. He preached his last Sermon here February 17th, 1993. During Reverend Dailey’s absence, Reverend Tonie Vereene helped us get through the hard times of being without a Pastor.
After finding out that Reverend Dailey would not be able to return, once again we began seeking and asking God’s guidance for another Shepard. This time were led to one our own, Reverend Vanzie L.
